Anam Cara Yacht Salon | Remodel | Completed 2021
Anam Cara formally known as Lazy Girl is a 1959 Burger motor yacht. This vintage yacht, originally from Palm Beach and belonging to a private owner, can still be seen navigating the very same waterways. However, today the yacht operates as a private charter vessel. Opening the yacht up to the public allows guests to step back in time and celebrate the history of yachting and its significance to the area.
The existing layout of the salon and aft deck made it impractical to entertain guests. The placement of plumbing fixtures and appliances were not easily accessible by the charter staff. We worked with our client to create a design that functioned in a way to serve both the salon and the aft deck simultaneously. A "C" shaped bar was designed as an open interstitial space between the two rooms. All plumbing fixtures and appliances were relocated to be accessible from the bar. Furthermore, the glass panel dividing inside to outside was made to open in order to serve the aft deck from the bar. In addition to the relocation of fixtures and appliances, additional storage and counter space was created.
Since the design space of the project was only to a localized area of the yacht, it was important to pull material finishes from other areas of the yacht. The very same millwork palette found in the galley was used to finish the bar with slight variations to the detailing of the millwork which were done to modernize the existing aesthetic.

The existing windows dividing the inside from outside were fixed. In the redesign, a simple bi-fold hinge opens inwards and rests parallel to an interior wall. As seen in the image on the left, the added counter space can be used to serve drinks from the bar to the aft deck seating area.

Prior to issuing construction documents that a millworker would use to create shop drawings for fabrication, a detailed 3D model was created to visualize the remodel. This process serves as a design tool which as designers we could solve complex detailing as well as for the client to understand the design three dimensionally.
