Mni Wiconi | New Construction | Bidding Stage
This 420 square foot detached accessory dwelling unit located in Lantana Florida is designed to compliment a future pool as well as to provide the property with additional dwelling. With a conceptual focus on the pool, this project is lovingly called Mni Wiconi meaning "Water is Life" in the Sioux language. The design strategy choreographs a poolside living experience through a covered outdoor living room with a pass-through window into a kitchenette, creating an intimate space for poolside entertainment and relaxation. The entrance into the accessory dwelling is a pair of French doors that open out onto the pool deck. The orientation and location of the accessory dwelling unit along with its spatial relationship to the main residence put the future pool on center stage within the property.

Concept drawing used to explore the relationships between rigid and loose forms and to study interior versus exterior space.

During the design phase, we studied massing and space planning arrangements. Together with our client we decided that the "L" shaped massing with a loosely defined exterior living room was the most appropriate for the site.

Sun studies were used to identify if the accessory dwelling unit would be better suited on the East or West side of the rear yard.
